1968: The Global Revolutions

New Movements Rise > Earth Day and Environmentalism

The radical politics of 1960s social justice struggles found a new and productive outlet in the new environmental movement of the early 1970s. From tactics, such as teach-ins and demonstrations, to employing the rhetoric of radical activism, the early years of the movement demonstrated the influence of earlier mobilizations. Taking the lessons from the 1960s, activists were able to build on what had come before. The first Earth Day, held in 1970, drew larger crowds than any previous demonstration in American history.
