A.J. Downing & His Legacy

Downing's Successors > George Woodward

George Woodward was more of a real estate developer than a builder. His books promoted land he had for sale in Bergen County, New Jersey and the ideal houses to build upon it. Woodward was one of the first pattern-book authors to recognize that not everyone would or could build a new house from the ground up. His book illustrates ideas for remodeling an existing house and transforming it with hallmarks of the picturesque style, such as the wrap-around porch and mansard roof.
