CANON MISSAE
Mainz: Johann Fust and Peter Schöffer, 1458
In 1457, Johann Fust and Peter Schöffer completed the printing of the Psalterium latinum, the first printed book to give both the name of the printers and the date of its printing.
The following year they used the same type and ornamental initial letters to print this book, the exceedingly rare Canon missae.
The type used to print the red text was inked separately and then replaced in the forme with the rest of the type that was inked black. The two-color initial letters were constructed in separate parts that were also inked separately in red and blue.
The Canon of the Mass is printed on vellum and bound at the center of the Missale Cracoviense (Mainz: Peter Schöffer, 1484).
