In this formal letter to his old friend, marked “Personal and Confidential,” President Butler informs “Mr. Plimpton” that the Trustees of Columbia University had voted to give him the degree of Doctor of Letters, honoris causa, at Commencement, June 4, 1929. The degree, he wrote, was being conferred “in recognition of your long years of devoted service to Barnard College, and of your labors as a collector and interpreter of the literature of the history of education and of educational methods,” adding that “Columbia is to honor itself in honoring you.”
