Sons of Russian-Jewish parents, Moshe (Morris) Gershowitz and Rose Bruskin, George and Ira Gershwin had stellar careers as individuals. They will forever be remembered as the songwriting team whose voice was synonymous with the sounds and style of the Jazz Age.

IRA GERSHWIN, 1896–1983 (left)

Born Israel Gershowitz, New York City. An American lyricist who created some of the most memorable songs of the 20th century in collaboration with his younger brother, composer George Gershwin. He wrote more than a dozen Broadway shows. The first lyricist to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize (1932).

GEORGE GERSHWIN, 1898–1937 (right)

Born Jacob Gershowitz, Brooklyn, New York. American composer. Composed both for Broadway and for the classical concert hall. Many of his compositions are recognized jazz standards; the very greatest singers and musicians have recorded Gershwin's songs.
