"Song of Ahab" was commissioned by the Quincy Fine Arts Society or Quincy, Illinois. A cantata for baritone and ten instruments, with texts selected by the composer from Melville's "Moby Dick," it was composed in 1950.

The work received its premier on May 17, 1951, with J. Leslie Pierce, baritone, and the Quincy Chamber Music Ensemble, George Irwin, conducting.
