Operas > Frederick Douglass - Still In Their Chains

One of the most moving arias in the opera, "Still In Their Chains," comes in Act III and is sung by Frederick Douglass himself.

Kevin Maynor performed this aria, accompanied on the piano by Tuffus Zimbabwe, during the first of The Green Space's series of programs entitled "Emancipation 150." His performance begins at 44 minutes into the program:

The program, "From Emancipation to the Great Migration," also includes a panel discussion by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, Isabel Wilkerson (The Warmth of Other SunsThe Epic Story of America’s Great Migration); Dr. Khalil Muhammad (Director of The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture); Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Dr. Eric Foner (The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery); and Dr. Jim Downs (Sick from Freedom: African American Illness and Suffering During the Civil War and Reconstruction). The conversation was co-moderated by award-winning writer Carl Hancock Rux and Robin Morris, Director of National Programs at the National Constitution Center.
