"Five Portraits" was commissioned by the McKimi Fund of the Library of Congress and completed in 1972. It received its premier at the Library of Congress on February 22, 1974, performed by Ruggiero Ricci, violin, and Leon Pommers, piano.

Kay utilized a twelve-tone matrix for the work, shown above. Kay's original completed manuscript score is held by the Library of Congress as part of the requirements of the commission.
