In her oral history interview, when Barbara Kay was asked about her husband's attitude to her involvement as a Freedom Rider and activist in New Jersey, she said: "an artist's wife has a very different life to live. I married a man who is an artist. He writes classical music, and he is best left alone to do his work. And if he has a wife who has imagination and needs and everyone has, it becomes difficult for her; and it was difficult for me to find a life for myself. And this is what I found. It was just a natural growth of experience. I was lucky because it was tremendous."
