By the 1850s, the ancient Jewish community of Larissa, in Greece, had dwindled considerably. This was mostly due to economic troubles and a massive fire which devastated homes, the main synagogue, and numerous Jewish schools. Due to economic difficulties, many Jewish families elected to move from Larissa to Jerusalem. This letter was sent from Ottoman Jerusalem by Tsiporah de Forno in 1866 to her son, Yaakov Shalish, who lived in Larissa.
