Abraham ben Isaac Lattes wrote this special prayer for a boy reaching the age of 13 (a bar mitzvah), during his tenure as rabbi of Venice in the mid-1800s. In this prayer, the new bar mitzvah expresses his thanks to God for guiding him to come of age within the Jewish community. Lavishly praising God, the prayer expresses the boy's desire to study the Torah and follow the commandments. This manuscript was copied almost a decade after Lattes’ death, indicating that this bar mitzvah prayer may have become accepted in Venice at this time.
