Many Jewish communities enacted laws in order to protect members from potential animosity of the non-Jews around them. This manuscript of legislation from the Portuguese community of Fez (Morocco) shows a community law that was distinct to Jews in Muslim lands: the leaf here describes the self-imposed prohibition against selling wine to non-Jews. Although the Jews were not the only non-Muslims in Fez, the Jews maintained a sensitivity to the Muslim prohibition against wine, and thus did not sell alcoholic beverages to any non-Jews in the city.
