Visual Rhetoric > Scrovegni Chapel

Cappella degli Scrovegni nell'Arena. Giotto, s. XIVI.

Padua, Italy.

Comics historian and artist Paul Karasik has compared viewing Giotto’s chapel frescoes to “walking into a comic strip.”  Giotto used borders to create panels and rows that comics readers will find familiar.  Similar scene divisions may be found in the Bayeux tapestry, using towers and trees, as well as in any number of medieval illuminations and altarpieces.
