Gender and Sexuality > Venus and Mars, United by Love

Venus and Mars, United by Love. Paolo Veronese, 1578.

Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York NY

This late 16th-century painting presents the archetypal personifications of femininity and masculinity.  Love, in the person of Cupid, binds the two extremes together, while another cherub reins in the animal power of Mars’ horse.
